What inspired me to launch my, WTF AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE? podcast was the understanding that there are infinite ways in which people explore these existential questions. On a search for meaning, some people go on silent retreats or attend workshops. Others get private coaching or travel to exotic destinations. And some, take psychedelics.
Steve Jobs said doing LSD made him realize the importance on creating great things over making money. Neuroscience and philosopher Sam Harris said he suspects his children will try it at some point in their lives. In his infamous blog, Drugs and the Meaning of Life, he says, “But if they don’t try a psychedelic like psilocybin or LSD at least once in their adult lives, I will wonder whether they had missed one of the most important rites of passage a human being can experience.”
Last summer, my husband Andrew and I went on a two-week road trip in an RV (see a recap of our trip here). We recorded this almost a year ago, and I sat on it for a long time, wondering if I should or shouldn’t post it. But in the end, I asked myself, “Would sharing this experience be valuable to my listeners?” And I believe it is. And also, it’s the truth (we did do it).
Before heading out on our “trip,” we found ourself asking the question, “What are we looking for?” And we were asking this question in the deepest way. Here is what Andrew found:
I would love for everyone to listen with an open mind. The experience was eye opening in many ways, and with our realization that what we were looking for is within us, it’s more than enough to tell us we’d likely not ever do it again. That said, enjoy our “trip.”
